
The Office of Mayor Karen Bass has requested that Deputy City Engineer Alfred Mata serve as Interim City Engineer, replacing Ted Allen who retired on May 31.
A graduate of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona with a degree in Civil Engineering, Alfred has been with the Bureau of Engineering for more than 31 years. Alfred was named Deputy City Engineer in 2014. During that time he has overseen the bureau’s Mobility and Engineering Services divisions for six years and Clean Water Infrastructure for four years.
Alfred has led numerous large scale infrastructure projects, including the Sixth Street Viaduct, where he oversaw property acquisition, design and construction. He worked on wastewater treatment plant projects, such as the City’s Nitrogen Removal Conversion Program for both the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant and Los Angeles-Glendale Water Reclamation Plant. In that role, he was responsible for delivering 10 projects with a total construction budget of approximately $101 million prior to a regulatory deadline.
Alfred also worked on the City’s Proposition O Bond Program, where he served as Assistant Program Manager, helping oversee the $500 million program to construct projects to improve the water quality in the City’s rivers, lakes, and beaches. During that time, Alfred also served as the Project Manager on the Echo Park Lake Rehabilitation Project and Machado Lake Ecosystem Rehabilitation Project.
Alfred has been married for 25 years and has three sons. He is an avid sports fan and enjoys being active, including playing softball in the bureau’s matchup each year with the City of San Francisco Engineering Department.
