Proof of Concept Tunnel Project LA
The Boring Company is seeking approval from the City of Los Angeles to construct a 2.7-mile tunnel. The proposed tunnel would provide proof of concept for a zero-emissions, high speed, underground, alternative means of transit for personal vehicles and/or single-rider use. The tunnel would be used solely for construction logistics verification, system testing, safety testing, operating procedure verification, and line-switching demonstrations.
The proposed tunnel would begin with the entry/exit point at 2352-6 Sepulveda Boulevard, north of West Pico Boulevard, in West Los Angeles. The tunnel would run southward under Sepulveda Blvd. and would end, without surfacing, below the vicinity of the intersection of Sepulveda Blvd. and Washington Boulevard in Culver City.
The City of Los Angeles has prepared a CEQA Notice of Exemption (under Class 32 for In-Fill Development Projects) for the proposed project. On March 27, 2018, the Board of Building and Safety Commissioners approved a haul route application allowing the export of 80,000 cubic yards of soil from the project site. The project will also require an Excavation Permit and a Revocable Permit from the Bureau of Engineering. The permits will be subject to approval by the City Council.
