LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to evaluate the environmental performance of buildings and measure their sustainability. In 2002, City Council mandated LEED certified for any City funded new construction projects larger than 7,500 square feet, the threshold was increased to LEED Silver in 2009.
