In 2001 the Los Angeles City Council adopted the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Certification requirement for all new construction and major renovation municipal buildings over 7,500 square feet. At the time Los Angeles was one of the first large cities to adopt such a policy. The Bureau of Engineering received the “Community Impact Award” from the Los Angeles Business Council in 2008 for this policy.
As of June 2025, the City has completed 64 LEED certified project of which 6 Platinum, 14 Gold, 18 Silver, and 26 Certified level with a total area of 1,885,997 square feet costing $1.2 Billion.
