Glendale Hyperion Bridge Improvement Project

About the Complex of Bridges

Built in the late 1920s and early 1930s, the Glendale Hyperion Bridge complex has been designated as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.

The Glendale Bridge Improvement Project looks to upgrade the structure to withstand an earthquake event, restore the bridge’s historical appearance, and improve traffic and pedestrian circulation.

This $62 million project includes seismic retrofit and widening of bridges, re-configuration of roadway, installation of bike lanes on Hyperion Avenue, and upgrading of various elements to meet current infrastructure standards. This project will preserve all historical elements: replication of historical balustrade railing, preservation of historical pylons, and refurbishment of existing light poles. Work also includes re-alignment of I-5 northbound off ramp, construction of a bicycle and pedestrian access ramp between northbound Glendale Boulevard and the LA River Bikeway, creation of an infiltration basin to protect the water quality of LA River, and construction of a new pedestrian bridge over the existing extended piers downstream from the viaduct complex.
