When will the streetcar project be completed and ready for revenue service?
The streetcar construction is anticipated to be completed in the second quarter of 2022, with revenue service starting in fourth quarter of 2022.
What route will the streetcar take through downtown?
The streetcar would run within existing traffic lanes and would extend from 1st Street on the north to 11th Street on the south. The streetcar would run along 1st Street, Broadway, 11th Street, Figueroa Street, 7th Street, and Hill Street. Additionally, there is an option to include an extension along Grand Avenue.
How many people will ride the streetcar?
At this time, ridership modeling estimates approximately 4,200 to 5,900 riders per day in 2020, depending on the alignment selected and average traveling speed of the streetcar. Ridership is forecasted to grow between 5,400 and 7,800 riders a day by 2040.
How fast will the streetcar go?
The City engaged in a speed improvement analysis that identified a number of bottlenecks in the streetcar alignment(s), and strategies to resolve them. At this time, based on the traffic modeling speed study simulation, the streetcar is anticipated to travel at approximately 6 MPH during the PM peak, and faster at all other times of day when traffic congestion is less severe.
How much will the streetcar project cost and what are the funding sources?
A 2017 independent cost estimate anticipates a total project cost of $290.7 million including finance charges or $274.2 million excluding finance charges. The streetcar currently has dedicated capital funding from a local Community Facilities District (CFD) and 30 years of operational funding approved by City Council. The City is seeking additional funding through the Federal Small Starts Grant program, Metro’s Measure M, and public-private partnership (P3) opportunities. How much will it cost to ride the streetcar?
A fare amount for the streetcar hasn't yet been decided. As engineering progresses and an operating plan is further developed, selecting an appropriate fare level will be a key consideration. Local fares for transit currently range from $0.50 (DASH) to $1.75 (Metro) per ride.
When will a design firm be selected?
The engineering firm Mott MacDonald was selected in December 2015 to perform preliminary (30%) design for the streetcar project. The preliminary design was completed in the spring of 2017. The Request for Proposal for final (100%) design is anticipated to be completed in 2018.
When will the final design be completed?
The final design is anticipated to be completed in 2020.
When will utility relocation work begin?
The streetcar construction is anticipated to commence in the third quarter of 2020. Public utility relocation is expected to begin shortly after the start of construction. Private utility relocation could potentially occur prior to the start of construction.
